Avoidance of Abhyanga (Massage) in Ayurveda
In Ayurveda, abhyanga (massage) is considered extremely important for cleansing and maintaining the health of the body. It helps in maintaining balance in the body and improves overall health. However, for individuals suffering from certain kapha disorders, using abhyanga may not be safe.
Patients suffering from kapha disorders, particularly pratishyaya (cold), are advised against receiving massages. This is because massage therapy may worsen their condition and lead to further complications.
Furthermore, individuals with digestive issues should also avoid abhyanga.
It is important to note that Ashtanga Hridayam also mentions:
"Varjyo'bhyaṅgaḥ kaphagrastakṛtasaṁśuddhayajīrṇibhiḥ" (Verse 9)
Translation: Abhyanga (massage) should be avoided in those suffering from diseases caused by an aggravated state of kapha and indigestion.
